Rattan Furniture: How It's Made | Quality | Fabrics | Frames
Like any natural material, the quality of rattan can vary considerably, and there are points to bear in mind when selecting your rattan furniture. Of course, there are genuine bargains to be found, but if prices seem to good to be true, then they probably are and the quality you will be getting might not be quite what you are hoping for or expecting.
To help ensure the quality of your rattan purchase, please consider the following:
The thickness of the stem determines the quality of rattan as well as the price. The thicker the diameter, the sturdier the item of furniture will be. Look for a thickness of around 1.5 inches or 3 centimetres.
Look for smooth stems without any hair-like strands. The finest quality rattan is sanded to ensure it is smooth to the touch.
The colour of finest rattan is even, so check for uniformity of shade to indicate a high grade material.
Some rattan is held together with staples and nails this may be adequate for very occasional use, but quality items will be jointed with glue and screws. The screws should be concealed to preserve the look of the finished product.
Properly cared for and maintained your rattan conservatory furniture will give you many years of service and comfort. Clean the surfaces regularly weekly or monthly, depending on usage use soapy water and skim the suds onto a soft cloth to prevent soaking the wood. Use a small brush (an old toothbrush is perfect) to get into the crevices and grooves.
Keep your natural rattan furniture indoors and out of direct sunlight. Place rubber stoppers on the feet of your furniture to prevent unnecessary damage to the rattan.
Once a year it is a good idea to give your natural rattan conservatory furniture a thorough spring clean, using a damper cloth. Dry the wood as quickly as possible, either by leaving it out in the sunshine or by using a hairdryer on a warm setting, not too hot. Apply a coat of shellac to seal the wood and protect it for another year.
Our rattan garden furniture is manufactured to the highest standards using a strong, durable synthetic substance called Ecolene™ which allows the furniture to be used outside. Untreated natural rattan is not suitable for outdoor use.
Ecolene rattan garden furniture is easily maintained without the need for special products or methods. Simply wipe down regularly with a damp cloth. We would also recommend cleaning it with a mild detergent once every three months to keep it looking its best.
Cushions, of course, should not be left outside but stored indoors to prevent them becoming damp or attracting mould.
